As the conflict between Israel and Hamas continues to escalate in the city of Rafah, tens of thousands of Palestinians are fleeing their homes in search of safety. More than 150,000 people have already left the city after warnings from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), with families packing up whatever belongings they can carry as they move to safer locations.
Many of these families have been displaced multiple times before due to past Israeli military offensives in Gaza, and now find themselves facing skyrocketing prices for basic necessities in Rafah. The IDF’s capture of the crossing with Egypt has only exacerbated the situation, with aid agencies running out of fuel and struggling to provide vital services like water pumps and bakeries.
Israeli officials claim that Rafah is the last stronghold of Hamas militants, who they believe must be eliminated or dispersed for the offensive to succeed. However, the toll of the conflict is already staggering, with over 34,500 people – mostly women and children – reported dead.
Aid agencies on the ground describe a dire situation, with overcrowded living conditions, limited access to clean water, poor sanitation, and inadequate food supplies for displaced families. Some families have resorted to setting up tent camps near the city of Deir al-Balah while they await assistance.
Among the displaced residents is Esraa al-Namlla, who uses a wheelchair after both her legs were amputated in an airstrike. Despite the challenges they face, families in Rafah are trying to stay positive for their children and remain hopeful for a better future amid the ongoing conflict.
As the crisis in Rafah worsens, the international community is being urged to provide immediate support and aid to those affected by the violence. The need for humanitarian assistance is urgent, with thousands of lives hanging in the balance as the conflict shows no signs of abating.
