A recent study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine has shed light on the effectiveness of intermittent fasting, also known as time-restricted eating, in weight loss. The study, which involved 41 participants, found that this dietary approach can help individuals shed pounds by simply consuming fewer calories overall.
During the 12-week study, 21 participants followed a time-restricted diet, while 20 followed a usual eating pattern. Most participants were Black women with obesity and either pre-diabetes or diet-controlled diabetes. Both groups were provided with controlled meals and calorie levels, with the time-restricted group only eating within a 10-hour window, while the usual eating group consumed food between 8 am and midnight.
At the conclusion of the study, both groups lost an average of approximately 5.3 pounds, with no significant difference in weight loss, glucose homeostasis, waist circumference, blood pressure, or lipid levels between the two groups. The findings suggest that when calorie intake is matched across groups, time-restricted eating does not offer any additional benefits in terms of weight loss.
Experts have praised the study, with some stating that the results are not surprising, as time-restricted eating essentially helps individuals consume fewer calories than they would otherwise. This simplified and accessible dietary strategy could prove beneficial for individuals looking to lose weight without the need to meticulously monitor their calorie intake each day.
Overall, the study highlights how intermittent fasting can be a useful tool in weight loss, particularly for those struggling to cut back on calories. While more research is needed in this area, time-restricted eating shows promise as a viable option for individuals looking to achieve their weight loss goals.
