As the rare near-total solar eclipse approaches on April 8, New York State officials and other providers are stepping up to offer free solar eclipse glasses to residents. The eclipse, which will pass over Long Island, is expected to start around 3:15 p.m. and will provide a unique experience for New Yorkers.
Residents can pick up to two pairs of ISO-certified glasses per person at the Long Island Welcome Center in Dix Hills and at other locations statewide. Despite Long Island not reaching 100% totality, more than 90% of the sun will be obstructed during the eclipse, creating a stunning sight for those who witness it.
Governor Kathy Hochul emphasized the importance of safely viewing the eclipse and warned residents about potential scams from retailers selling fake eclipse glasses. To ensure safety, consumers are urged to look for glasses with an International Organization for Standardization (ISO) stamp sold by reputable retailers.
The eclipse is expected to last up to 2½ hours, providing ample time for residents to enjoy this celestial event. Whether you are a seasoned eclipse watcher or a first-time observer, don’t miss this opportunity to witness the wonder of nature safely with your free solar eclipse glasses.
