Doctors from across the globe are urging against the use of castor oil for treating vision problems, cautioning the public about the alarming trend propagated through TikTok. While castor oil is commonly used to treat skin infections and is found in some over-the-counter eye drops, medical professionals emphasize that it is inappropriate for addressing eye-related concerns.

The craze began after various TikTok videos claimed that applying castor oil to different parts of the eyes, including the eyelids, eyelashes, and under the eyes, could effectively treat dryness, floaters, cataracts, poor vision, and even glaucoma. However, doctors quickly refuted these claims, emphasizing that castor oil does not possess the ability to dissolve or fix any eye issues. On the contrary, using castor oil directly in the eye may cause irritation or infection.

Highlighting the importance of seeking professional medical advice, the American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends consulting an optician for any concerns related to eye health, rather than relying on unreliable and potentially harmful home remedies like castor oil. Studies examining the effects of eye drops containing castor oil for dry eyes and blepharitis have also encountered challenges due to the lack of quality and reliable data.

Opticians further emphasize that castor oil has no impact on conditions like cataracts, floaters, and glaucoma, which primarily affect the inner structures of the eyeball. Tragically, ignoring early symptoms of these conditions and relying on castor oil treatment could result in permanent vision loss and complications during surgery.

Instead, doctors emphasize the importance of maintaining eye health through simple, everyday practices. This includes following a healthy balanced diet, removing makeup before bed to avoid potential eye infections, wearing sunglasses outdoors to protect against harmful UV rays, and attending regular eye examinations to catch any potential issues early.

As the TikTok trend continues to gain popularity, doctors believe it is crucial for the public to be aware of the potential dangers associated with the use of castor oil for vision problems. By seeking the appropriate professional help and following simple preventive measures, individuals can safeguard their eye health and avoid the risks posed by unsound remedies.
